Cardinals sign Porter

The Arizona Cardinals have signed veteran linebacker Joey Porter to a three-year contract. Financial terms have not yet been disclosed.

The Cardinals were in the market for a linebacker after star Karlos Dansby left to sign a big deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Porter, who ironically was just let go by the Dolphins, certainly is on the downside of his career. However, he is still pretty good at getting after the quarterback.

The Cardinals were an attractive team for Porter because they are located close to his home in California and he is familiar with many of the coaches on their staff.

Porter spent a lotĀ of time with the Pittsburgh Steelers early in his career, and many of their coaches came over to the Cardinals when the team hired Ken Whisenhunt to be their head coach.

Anderson signs with Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have signed quarterback Derek Anderson to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million.

Anderson, who was recently released by the Cleveland Browns, will come in as a veteran presence that can push Matt Leinart for the starting quarterback job.

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he has seen an incredible amount of growth in Leinart over the past couple of years but that they are excited about what Anderson can bring to the table.

Anderson said that he thinks a fresh start is exactly what he needed, and he is excited about the prospect of battling for the starting job yet again.

It’s a very good situation for Anderson to come into. He has plenty of weapons to work with offensively and Leinart has been shaky when pressed into starting duty.

Leinart ready for challenge

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart said he is ready for the challenge of replacing Kurt Warner.

Leinart said he really isn’t nervous or worried about the job, but added that he isn’t cocky about it, either.

He said he knows what needs to be done and has the confidence in himself to go make plays.

He has been sitting behind Warner for three years, which has allowed him to mature and grow into the starting job.

With the team losing a lot of players in the offseason, Leinart believes that the media’s doubt about the Cardinals being able to overcome the defections will just make them work harder.

Cardinals acquire Rhodes from Jets

The Arizona Cardinals have acquired veteran safety Kerry Rhodes in a trade with the New York Jets.

The team will send its fourth-round pick in 2010 and seventh-round selection in 2011 to New York for the safety’s services.

The Cardinals, who have been crushed by retirement, free agency and trades, needed a safety to replace Antrel Rolle, who signed a big deal with the New York Giants.

Rhodes has the ability to be a big play safety and certainly could meet or exceed the expectations of Arizona should have come in ready to play.

The safety left New York on poor terms with nearly the entire Jets coaching staff, particularly head coach Rex Ryan. Ken Whisenhunt won’t stand for much of Rhodes’ attitude either, so he had better buckle down when he gets to Arizona.

Cardinals trade Boldin to Ravens

After months on end of trade speculation, the Arizona Cardinals have finally dealt disgruntled wide receiver Anquan Boldin to the Baltimore Ravens for a third and fourth-round draft pick.

In addition, the Cardinals also sent their fifth-round draft pick to the Ravens in a deal that was just one of many signaling major changes to the Arizona franchise.

Boldin has been unhappy at the team’s unwillingness to give him a big contract, but the trade to the Ravens instantly came with a four-year, $24 million deal.

Boldin said that he was excited all day when he received word that the two teams were in serious talks and wished that all of this had happened last year.

Without Boldin, the Cardinals will probably look to become a more run-oriented team. They will also make Steve Breaston their No. 2 receiver and move Early Doucet into the slot.

Cardinals release Rolle

The Arizona Cardinals have released starting safety Antrell Rolle to avoid paying him his roster bonus.

The team remains interested in re-signing Rolle, but would want him back at a much cheaper rate.

Rarely does this work out between the two parties considering the player feels really slighted and taken advantage of.

The former first-round pick began his NFL career as a cornerback but later made the switch to safety.

He had 12 interceptions in 59 games as a starter, and teams will definitely be interested in his services.
