Dockett signs extension

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett signed a four-year contract extension worth $48 million.

Dockett has become one of the best defensive tackles in the league and was certainly worthy of the deal.

He had two years remaining on his current contract, so this locks him up over the long haul so long as his play doesn’t slip.

Dockett impressed his coaches and teammates by showing up to training camp and not holding out for a new contract. ( Read More…)

Fitzgerald sprains MCL

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald sprained his MCL in the team’s first preseason game.

Fitzgerald was injured when he made a catch over the middle and was quickly upended by a low tackle.

The wide receiver came out of the game for a few moments but eventually returned to action.

It was surprising to see Fitzgerald come back into the game considering it was a meaningless preseason contest. ( Read More…)

Whisenhunt believes in Leinart

There are not a lot of people out there who believe in Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, but there is at least one important guy who does.

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he is a Matt Leinart believer and thinks he is ready to take the next step.

He said that Leinart has grown a lot in the past couple of years and learned a lot from Kurt Warner.

Whisenhunt said that he doesn’t agree with the theory that Leinart isn’t any good because he couldn’t be out a Hall of Famer for the starting job. ( Read More…)

Dockett already thinking about free agency

Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett is already thinking about becoming a free agent after the 2011 season.

It’s widely agreed across the league that Dockett is currently significantly underpaid by the Cardinals.

However, Arizona has been a tough team to deal with in the past when it comes to contract extensions.

That means that Dockett isn’t expecting any type of contract talks or extension offers to come his way. ( Read More…)

Dockett calls out Rhodes

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett has called out new safety Kerry Rhodes.

Dockett is concerned that Rhodes isn’t taking football seriously enough and will be out of shape in training camp.

The lineman noticed that Rhodes has been busy taking a lot of trips in between offseason workouts and training camp. ( Read More…)

Gant suspended four games

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Ed Gant has been suspended four games by the league office.

Gant’s suspension is a result of the NFL’s ban on anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

The suspension could cost Gant a roster spot, as he was expected to compete to the fourth on the depth chart at the wide receiver position. ( Read More…)

Leinart gaining momentum

It appears that Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart is going to be given every opportunity to be successful as the team’s starter.

Leinart has impressed those around him with his growth and maturity over the past year.

Kurt Warner said recently that he believes Leinart is ready for the responsibility of being an NFL quarterback.

He has been impressive to players and coaches during offseason workouts, which is at least a start.

Derek Anderson has quickly become a favorite of head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s, so the Cardinals won’t balk at making a change at quarterback.

Faneca signs with Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have signed offensive lineman Alan Faneca to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million.

Faneca was just recently cut by the New York Jets, who have decided to go with youth at the position.

The Arizona signing reunites Faneca with head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was his offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh a few years back.

Whisenhunt believes that Faneca is still playing at a very high level after reviewing tape of him during his time with the Jets.

Faneca is excited to be reunited with Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm, his former offensive line coach in Pittsburgh.

Cardinals add girth to d-line

The Arizona Cardinals did not trade up or down, yet had exactly what they wanted fall right in their lap.

Looking for a big presence along the defensive line, tackle Dan Williams fell to the Cardinals with the No. 26 overall pick.

Many felt Williams would be selected somewhere in the early teens, so getting him so late was tremendous value.

Williams will combine with Darnell Dockett to form a fearsome duo for opposing offensive lines.

There is some concern about his work ethic or that he might take some plays off, but this is a pretty standard policy among defensive tackles.

Cardinals trade McFadden to Steelers

The Arizona Cardinals traded cornerback Bryant McFadden to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round draft pick.

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt wasn’t so pleased with McFadden’s short stint with the Cardinals.

The team feels that they can find a reserve to take over for McFadden and not miss a beat.

There was a lot of Pittsburgh connection in this trade, with the old Steelers offensive coordinator dealing McFadden back to his former home.

The Cardinals then used the draft pick to select quarterback John Skelton, a talented guy with a big arm who will be a developmental project.
